Extradiol dioxygenases are essential biocatalysts for breaking down catechols. The vicinal oxygen chelate (VOC) superfamily contains a large number of extradiol dioxygenases, most of which are found as part of catabolic pathways degrading a variety of natural and human-made aromatic rings.
