Expression of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) on the surface of tumor cells and its interaction with programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes suppress anti-tumor immunity. In breast tumors, PD-L1 expression levels are the highest in estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone receptor-negative, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (triple-negative) cancers.
