Plants encode numerous intracellular receptors known as nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat receptors (NLRs) that recognize pathogen-derived effectors or their activity to activate defenses. miRNAs regulate NLR genes in many species, often triggering the production of phased siRNAs (phasiRNAs).
