Biological nitrogen fixation, a process unique to diazotrophic prokaryote, is catalyzed by the nitrogenase complex. There has been a long-standing interest in reconstituting a nitrogenase biosynthetic pathway in a eukaryotic host with the final aim of developing N-fixing cereal crops.
