background: The radix of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. (PaeR) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinically used for treating depression. Although it has been established that PaeR can protect the liver and alleviate depressive-like behaviors, its bioactive chemicals and antidepressant mechanism remain unclear.
