Brown macroalgae synthesize large amounts of fucoidans, sulfated fucose-containing polysaccharides, in the ocean. Fucoidans are of importance for their recently discovered contribution to marine carbon dioxide sequestration and due to their potential applications in biotechnology and biomedicine.
